The Shocking Connections Between Cognitive Decline and Hearing Loss

There’s a number of recently published scientific studies that show direct correlations between untreated hearing loss and cognitive decline. Your cognitive abilities are related to your brain’s ability to remember information, hold fine motor skills, and recall memories. Untreated hearing loss can lead to memory problems and a struggle to retain info that you need – but thankfully, there have been some enlightening conclusions because of all this research. Hearing loss is easily treatable, and with the help of professional hearing care, you can not only avoid cognitive decline, but several other negative health conditions. If you or a loved one has been dealing with hearing loss challenges, we encourage you to visit us for a comprehensive hearing assessment; we can look at your ears and see what we can do to help treat your hearing loss.

The Biggest Peer-Reviewed Study in History

In December of 2022, a group of researchers from the University of Singapore took on one of the largest studies in history to do with hearing care, featuring 137,484 participants, 25 observational studies, and six trials across the world. Researchers Brian Sheng Yep Yeo, MBBS; Harris Jun Jie Muhammad Danial Song, MBBS and Emma Min Shuen Toh, MBBS spearheaded this study that looked to understand the connection between hearing loss and cognitive decline, and the results were astounding.

The use of hearing aids was shown to provide a 19 percent reduction of long-term cognitive decline, and those who started the study with some level of cognitive impairment had a 20 percent lower risk of progressing further to dementia. Reduction of long-term cognitive decline19%19%Lower risk of progressing further to dementia.20%20%

A quote from the study caught my eye: “This means that it is never too late to start using hearing aids, but early treatment may help to preserve the most cognition.”

This is one of the most conclusive studies for hearing care out there currently; it’s crucial that you take note of the results of this study and keep them in mind for your own hearing care.
