Hearing Assessments
Comprehensive Hearing Evaluations in Peterborough and Marmora areas
Our children grow up without us even realizing it. Being with them every day, we don’t notice the small, gradual changes in their growth. However, when we look back at photos from a few years ago, we’re often surprised by how much they’ve changed.
The same applies to your hearing.
Hearing loss occurs so gradually that it’s nearly impossible to detect any noticeable difference day to day. But if you could compare your hearing now with several years ago, the difference would be stark.
This is why people around us often notice our hearing decline before we do. The biggest issue with untreated hearing loss is that it continues to worsen over time.
At the Ear Depot, our experts are passionate about regular hearing assessments and taking action at the first signs of hearing loss. Whether it’s needing the TV louder than before or struggling to hear conversations in noisy restaurants, the best decision you can make is to schedule a regular hearing assessment.
What Happens at a Hearing Assessment?
1. A Warm Welcome
After a warm greeting, it will start by getting to know you better so we can fully understand why you’ve decided to have your hearing tested and what early signs you experienced before your visit. Whether you’re here because family, friends, or coworkers urged you to seek help, you feel like you’re missing out on conversations, or you’re experiencing ringing in your ears, we want to hear your story. Feel free to ask questions and express any concerns so you can feel comfortable with us.
2. Physical Examination of Your Ears
We’ll examine your ears to ensure they are healthy, checking for any blockages in the ear canal and verifying that there are no structural issues with your eardrum. Some patients discover their hearing issues are temporary and related to factors like inflammation, foreign objects, growths, or earwax blockages. Recognizing the signs of hearing loss early is crucial, and scheduling a hearing test is the first step toward better hearing health.
3. Hearing Tests
For the main hearing tests, you will be seated in a soundproof booth and fitted with headphones. You will respond to tones at different pitches and volumes by pressing a button. We will also test your ability to hear spoken words, asking you to repeat what you hear. To simulate real-world conditions, we will add various types of background noise at different volume levels. Our goal is to determine what you can and cannot hear.

4. Reviewing Your Results
Unlike many healthcare tests, you won’t have to wait for the results. As soon as we finish, we will review your results with you, presented on an Audiogram. This graph visually illustrates your hearing strengths and the areas where you struggle. We’ll explain each part to you and then develop a plan together to help you hear better.
