"I Blamed Everyone Else": When Denial Turns into Volume 100

|

For many people, denial is one of the earliest signs that something has changed with their hearing. Rather than recognizing that they're missing parts of conversations, they might find themselves looking for other explanations. Maybe everyone else is mumbling, or the TV simply isn’t loud enough.

Ken, one of our patients, knew that feeling all too well. He even had a convenient excuse for avoiding chores: he simply couldn’t hear them. As he humorously put it, “I was happier when I thought everyone else was the problem.”

His turning point came when the volume on his TV reached a level that was impossible to ignore. “If you're turning the TV up so loud that the neighbours know who got voted off Survivor before you do, it's probably time,” he said.

October is National Audiology Month, making it the perfect time to stop brushing off the signs and schedule a professional hearing evaluation. Ken’s story is a reminder that you don’t need to wait until your TV hits volume 100 to find out how well you hear.

Settling the Family Debate at The Ear Depot

Visiting a hearing clinic for the first time can come with a few concerns. You may wonder if you’ll feel pressured to buy hearing aids or be faced with unexpected costs.

Ken had some of those reservations before visiting The Ear Depot. In his words, “I was waiting for a steep price, but instead I got honest answers and friendly people.”

For years, Ken and his family had gone back and forth over his hearing. He insisted that everyone was mumbling, while his family had a different diagnosis. A professional hearing assessment finally provided an objective answer, giving Ken and his family some clarity after years of debate.

The verdict? “The Ear Depot sided with my family, and I’ve been trying to appeal the decision ever since,” he said.

While Ken may still be contesting the result, his experience highlights the value of professional hearing care. A hearing assessment provides clear, objective information about how well you’re hearing, helping replace assumptions and family debates with answers you can trust.

Rediscovering a Surprisingly Noisy World

The unexpected surprise for Ken was noticing how many sounds he had been missing.

“The biggest impact hearing aids have had on my life is realizing just how noisy the world actually is,” he shared.

Adjusting to hearing clearly again can take time as your brain gets used to processing sounds that may have been difficult to hear before. Everyday noises can suddenly become more noticeable, from ticking clocks and chirping birds to sounds that help you stay aware of your surroundings, such as traffic or a smoke alarm.

Hearing more clearly can also make conversations less mentally demanding. When you don’t have to work as hard to piece together what someone is saying, listening can feel less tiring and leave more mental energy for engaging in the conversation itself.

For Ken, hearing these sounds again brought a new appreciation for the details that surround us every day, and his experience shows just how much of the world we experience through sound.

Take the First Step: Why You Shouldn't Wait

Putting off hearing care does more than keep your neighbours up to date on reality TV; it can mean missing the richer, subtler sounds that make up everyday life.

If Ken’s story sounds familiar, his message is simple: “My advice: go.”

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: My previous experience with hearing aids was disappointing. Is it worth trying again?

A: Absolutely. Hearing aid technology has advanced significantly in recent years, with today’s devices offering improved sound quality, greater comfort and features such as Bluetooth connectivity and rechargeable batteries.

Proper fitting, personalized programming and ongoing follow-up care can also make a meaningful difference in how well your hearing aids work for you. At The Ear Depot, we take the time to understand your concerns and make adjustments based on your experience.

Q: Why might my family notice my hearing challenges before I do?

A: Hearing changes often develop gradually, giving you time to adapt without realizing how much has changed. As a result, family members often notice these changes before you do, particularly when conversations become harder to follow or the television volume starts creeping up.

Q: Why do everyday sounds seem unusually loud when I first wear hearing aids?

A: Your brain may have become accustomed to receiving less sound, so clocks, footsteps, running water and other everyday noises can initially feel more noticeable. This is a normal part of the adjustment process for many people.

Consistent use and follow-up appointments allow your brain time to adapt and give your hearing care professional opportunities to refine the settings.
