Hearing Aids and WSIB

WSIB or Workplace Safety and Insurance Board had introduced the Workplace Safety & Insurance Act (WSIA) that will cover the expenses of hearing tests and hearing aids to a certain extent if it is a noise-induced hearing loss.

Hearing loss may occur due to many factors, hereditary to trauma. If you were exposed to high levels of noise at your workplace for long periods of time on a daily basis then, it is highly likely that you will suffer from hearing loss at a later date. It has been observed in many cases of people working in factories.

The specialists at The Ear Depot will learn about your occupation to determine the reason behind hearing loss as well as to check whether you will be able to avail the WSIB program or not. Your workplace must also be located within Ontario to be eligible for WSIB hearing aid coverage.

Eligibility Criteria for NIHL (Noise Induced Hearing Loss)

  • The employers should be covered by Ontario’s WSIA
  • Exposure to hazardous noise (sensorineural hearing loss)
  • Hearing loss should be 22.5 decibels in each ear or worse.
  • Exposure to noise levels over 90 decibels for 8 hours or more per day. The patient should be exposed to such conditions for at least 5 years.
  • Exposure to excessively high noise levels for a shorter time period
  • Exposure to comparatively lower noise levels (slightly below 90 decibels) for a longer period of time

According to WSIA, you will also be eligible for WSIB if you have tinnitus along with noise-induced hearing loss (occupational hazard).

A common misconception is that a person may not be eligible if they are not currently working in noise. This however is not the case. Whether you are retired and even if your previous workplace is no longer in operation, you are still eligible for coverage if you meet the above the criteria listed.
